Something extraordinary happened to me in March. Breaking from nearly a decade long tradition of reading what is crassly called “genre fiction” by those who should know better, I ordered a John McGahern novel purely on the strength of a movie trailer. I never read him before despite knowing he’s one of Ireland’s greatest novelists. That They May Face The Rising Sun is a book of pure magic. It’s about nothing and everything. It’s a book where nothing happens, but everything happens. It’s a book about the essence of humanity, where people go about their daily lives in Leitrim around the mid 1980s. It’s a year in their lives. It’s beautiful and poetic, and I will be thinking about it for years to come. Because it is a book that made me feel about my life and the country I was born in. That the last act takes place in and around Easter seems serendipitous. Books are magic. We need more of them to make sense of the world and of ourselves. #bookstagram #books #ireland🍀 #irishbookstagram #johnmcgahern #sotheymayseetherisingsun #novel #irishnovelistsI’m quite proud of myself. My first academic assignment this century results in a 2:2. I now move on to the Advanced Diploma in Forensic Criminology next month. I’m excited. Thank you @citycollegesdublin and especially John Deane O’Keeffe for his sparkling, informative, and eye-opening lectures.Get off Twitter and follow me on Bluesky. Many of my Irish peeps are over there now. If you need an invite code, I’ve five to hand out. Hit me up here or by DM.Information that’s useful to know, y’all. #organdonation #kidneydonation #kidneytransplant #kidneydiseaseThis landed on my Kindle today. It’s the first book of the #SturmtaucherTrilogy by @alanjonesbooks. I’m excited to read it.The last time I read a series straight through, starting with book one and not reading anything else, it was The Expanse. This series, from British writer Mick Herron, is addictive as any licit or illicit substance. They get better with each publication. I’m five books and two novellas in. I’ve two more full length novels and one novella to go. I’m not stopping until I’ve read them all. #SlowHorses #MickHerron #JoeCountry #SloughHouse #SpyFiction #AppleTV
