On This Day…2 September

I have been reliably informed that there are 120 days left until the end of the year. Make each one of them count!

Here endeth the preaching! Here cometh the history lesson!

On this day in…

1666 – The Great Fire of London breaks out and burns for three days, destroying 10,000 buildings including St Paul’s Cathedral. (Someone forgot to turn the gas off!)

1901 – Vice President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt utters the famous phrase, “Speak softly and carry a big stick” at the Minnesota State Fair. My big stick comes with me wherever I go. I need it in Dublin.

Crash site of the USS Shenandoah

1925 – The U.S. Zeppelin the USS Shenandoah crashes, killing 14.

1945 – Vietnam declares its independence, forming the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

1991 – The United States recognizes the independence of the Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Very decent of them, wouldn’t you say?

A number of actors and actresses celebrate their birthday today.

Keanu Reeves is 46.

This just about sums up Keanu's "acting" style.

The beautiful Salma Hayak is 44. Have a tequila shot on me, Salma.

Lost star Cynthia Watrose is 42.

Troy Donohue passed away on this day in 2000. You may remember him from such movies as Rome Adventure and A Distant Trumpet.

Then again, you may not.
